The Sacred Mountain of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world (measured from its base) and a sacred site to peoples around the world, has been threatened by the proposed construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Hawaiian First Nations have steadfastly resisted construction of the project. Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory has attempted construction of the telescope, but protectors were able to successfully block construction. As a result of persistent pressure, the project's permit was revoked by the Supreme Court of Hawai'i on December 2, 2015.

Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory is currently in permitting proceedings in order to get approval for the project.
